Nice big portions and friendly staff, we will return! Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 (Nice interior, but quite loud) Food: Fried Potatoes: 5/5 - Out of this world!! These were amazing. Sago (dessert): 5/5 - This dessert was fantastic. So creamy and delicious. The sauce was very flavorful and ended up dipping our roti from the other dessert into it. Roti: 5/5 - Excllent Roti. Warm, flaky, flavorful. Pickled Pinapple (side): 4.5/5 - Very unique flavor (like Xmas) which was very nice and added an intriguing dimension to the meal. Penang Noodles: 4/5 - Tasty dish but nothing that really stood out. The sausage was flavorful but very salty. Had a bit of spice to it. Roti & Kaya (dessert): 3.5/5 - This was good mainly because of the Roti, the custard was good but we loved the cream of the other dessert way more. Rendang: 3/5 - Smelled great but was pretty bland overall. Huge portion and they gave extra rice which we took hoke for lunch. Rendang is supposed to be spicy and this wasn't at all. The meat was tender but needs a punch up in flavor. Sambal (sauce): 0/5 - I've had many iterations of Sambal all over Asia and beyond. Never have I had one that only tasted like a fish. It's supposed to use shrimp paste or fish sauce but the overwhelming anchovy flavor was terrible IMO. It also wasn't spicy at all!

(4.5/5) First time trying Malaysian food and it did not disappoint! Ambiance (4/5): The establishment itself is pretty big and spacious! I loved dining next to their garage style window. Other than that, their space is plain and can use a splash of decor. Food (5/5/): It was our first time trying Malaysian food so we ordered more than usual. We got the Hakka noodles, fried chicken, beef rendang, and eggplant. We enjoyed every single dish! The beef rendang had the perfect amount of heat and their Hakka noodles were so flavorful. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection--- the skin was crispy and the actual chicken was tender. Service (4.5/5): Don't get me wrong, our server was a gem. Hazel was very attentive and constantly checked up on us. Food came out quick, which was a bonus. However, the execution of certain dishes made no sense to us. For instance, some of the main entrees came out before the appetizers/small plates. We were told that dishes come out in the order it's ready. The process genuinely made no sense to us. Also, they charge $8 for roti which should be criminal. Overall, we truly enjoyed Makan and we will definitely be back to check out their brunch!

That fried chicken with sauce on it is fried just like how my grandfather made it but with Malay flavors. Roti is solid, the beef rendang is great but needs more veggies to cut through it. Drinks are strong

a longtime hit list restaurant has finally been visited and I used my magical charisma to ensure we ordered basically only what I wanted - this dry beef curry was frickin stellar. I don't know why it's called dry because it's fully a curry sauce with three hunks of meat. the meat was so soft and delicious but the curry sauce (despite its peculiar gray color) had a strong nutmeg flavor I've never experienced in curry before - this saucy, full bodied taste of the curry contrasted with the spice bird. A salty soft roasted half chicken with an extremely vinegary mustard sauce, crispy fresh vegetables, and mustard cabbage. this plate was SHARP and special - the contrast of the two dishes was perfect for splitting dishes. I simply could not find a better pairing. - the service was fast but I didn't feel rushed at all. the waiter was very nice and not annoyed as we struggled to decide. it is gorgeous large space in an old garage with tables of all sizes, an active bar, funky art, and webbed chairs.

Would have been a perfect 5 stars if the service had been a little better. Really should make this a 3.5, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt since they have been better in the past. From the beginning, it seemed like no one was there and I was greeted and brought to the furthest table on the other side of the restaurant even though there were plenty of open spots. It was very quiet and a good place for work, a date, or just a casual night. We were there for a work dinner and got the mussels, fried potatoes, street noodles with only shrimp, fried chicken, veggie curry, and roti. We were gifted the sago at the end, which was really nice. The food was amazing, they made accommodations for my dietary restrictions and were lovely about modifications. However, we felt a little rushed by our server the entire time, we did have a 7:30 reservation and do understand that they close at 9, but it was still a little rushed. Our server told us how they were out of bread so we got rice with mussels instead and how good the bread with the mussels were. Very weird to mention if they were out of it because we wouldn't have known. The staff kept trying to check on us and keep clearing our plates even though there was still food on it and we were clearly in the middle of conversation. We also were reminded about how the service charge is not a tip so make sure to include it. We all live through the service charge and understand it is not a tip, but to be reminded of it was a little off putting.

This restaurant is located north of the national mall in a quaint neighborhood. There is street parking available. I came with a friend to check out this place and I ordered Nasi ganja which is chicken (thigh and drumstick), blanched okra, cut cucumbers, half of a salted egg, and sambal. I really loved the taste of the chicken. They say they marinated it and made it crispy on the outside is wonderful. The sambal was the right amount of spice. I wished they made the cucumber the traditional way which is pickled cucumber rather than cut cucumber. My friend had the char kway tiao. I tried a little of hers and it was delicious as well. The interior was spacious and had a lot of seating. It did not seem to be run by Indonesians but overall the visit was good.

I've never heard Malaysian cuisine before so I was excited when my friend kidnapped me for this little adventure. The restaurant was mostly empty, and it was brunch time... that's wild! Maybe it's the prices? Anyways, the brunch menu had quite a few exciting selections -- sorry, no bottomless options! My friend told me I had to get these biscuits. We had a party of like 10, so we got to try a lot of different things together. The biscuits were first... they came with a coconut pandan custard. OH. MY. GOD. I could've just eaten that by itself and I would've been satisfied. But I tried many things, including... -Sate ayam (chicken skewers) - couldn't get enough of these and that peanut sauce -Turnip cakes - YUM -Fried chicken - tricky to share, but flavorful and tasty -Rendang: this was actually the low for me. After having had it from an Indonesian restaurant recently, I was excited to see how they did it, and it didn't have much flavor like I was hoping for or expecting. I was intrigued to see how much crossover there was with Indonesian cuisine. I also had this fantastic tea called Teh Tarik. I'd be curious to try other things on the menu at different times of the day. But seriously, I just need a whole pan of the biscuits and custard.

My husband and I are visiting our daughter here in DC and one of the best things about coming here is the food! Makan I am example of not just a meal but an experience that you will remember. We had a reservation and got seated right away. We were greeted by the hostess but also every staff person we walked past said hello and welcome. The inside space is nicely decorated and it was a bit loud when it was crowded but not to the point we couldn't hear each other. There were 4 of us and we ordered 4 different cocktails so we could all taste them. They were all well balanced, interesting and delicious. I could have had the espresso martini again for dessert! We ordered 1 small plate and 3 entrees for 4 of us to share. The fried yuca with coconut was hot and fresh. The flavorful bits on the side made it extra delicious. The mains we shared were the dried beef, friend chicken and the spicy Hakka noodles. Not one bad bite!!! The flavors were bright and interesting. The spicy noodles are very spicy so have a Kleenex handy! Our server made great suggestions and was friendly and checked in often without being intrusive. Such a wonderful dinner. We talked about the food the rest of the night and I'm sure we will still be talking about it for days to come! A memory making experience!

The char kway teow was like a good version of stir fried rice noodles. The shrimp in it was great, big and not over or undercooked. The Chinese sausage was a quality version of a familiar childhood taste, sweeter than western sausage. Noodles were pretty heavy and salty. I wasn't a fan of the ayam goreng, it's definitely for more adventurous eaters. The salted egg yolk sauce is grainy and eggy in a way I kind of expected from childhood but I guess I was hoping for more of the salty and creamy side of salted egg yolk. The fried chicken aspect isn't prominent because of the sauce, so get something else if you want fried chicken. My husband and I unexpectedly loved the Milo dinosaur. The semi-dissolved chocolate malt sludge throughout the drink was actually delicious and a fun textural element that was slightly crunchy. Overall the drink tasted very chocolatey, not just milky. I was googling recipes the rest of the night but doubt anything will match Makan's version just right!
